Written by on March 3, 2025

The New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies (NYSCCRR) will host a public hearing in Rochester on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery. The event will provide a platform for community members to share personal testimonies and discuss the long-term effects of slavery and institutional discrimination on African Americans and descendants of the enslaved.

A key focus of the hearing will be the impact of urban renewal policies that led to the displacement of Black communities in Rochester and across New York State. Specifically, the demolition of the Clarissa Street neighborhood and the construction of the Inner Loop will be examined as examples of how discriminatory policies erased Black communities, hindered generational wealth, and deepened racial disparities.

Attendees will have the chance to meet Dr. Seanelle Hawkins, Chair of NYSCCRR, who is leading efforts to gather insights and propose policy solutions for reparations in New York.

Established in 2023 under Senate Bill S1163A, NYSCCRR aims to develop systemic remedies to address structural inequities rooted in slavery and systemic racism.
