A Rochester family is going through a rollercoaster of emotions after learning their sister, Shanice Crews—declared dead in early 2024—is actually alive and living in Detroit.
Shanice had been missing since 2021, and in April 2024, police told her family she had died from a drug overdose.
Due to the body’s condition, no one was allowed to view it, and it was cremated. The family held a funeral and even wore jewelry with the ashes.
Months later, in November, someone from Detroit sent the family a message saying Shanice had just volunteered at an event.
After showing photos to the Medical Examiner’s Office, DNA testing proved the remains were not Shanice’s.
The family is now seeking legal help and trying to find Shanice, who still hasn’t contacted them. They say they’re heartbroken and want answers about how this mistake happened.
