Rochester Drivers Hit with Multiple Speeding Tickets from Photo Radar SUV

Written by on November 12, 2024

A photo radar SUV parked at a highway construction site on I-490 has issued numerous speeding tickets, catching drivers by surprise. One driver, Jim Blatt, received five tickets, all from the same location where the speed limit changes from 40 to 55 mph. Blatt, unaware of the 40 mph limit, described it as “an expensive month.”

Another driver, Linda Olsen, felt her ticket was almost like a “money grab.” This year alone, New York’s DOT photo radar has issued over 132,000 tickets statewide, with 44,206 in the Rochester area, generating $5.1 million in fines. While each ticket is $50 with no points on drivers’ licenses, the rapid issuance has raised concerns. After News10NBC’s report, the state moved warning signs back for better visibility, but many drivers, like Blatt, appreciate the investigative coverage bringing attention to the issue.
