Written by on August 27, 2025

The Rochester City Council unanimously voted to codify the city’s sanctuary city policy, reinforcing protections for residents regardless of immigration status, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or pregnancy status.

The new legislation also embeds the New York State Equal Rights Amendment into local law, ensuring reproductive and bodily autonomy rights.

The vote followed a large demonstration with both support and opposition. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice continues its legal efforts to overturn Rochester’s sanctuary policies, while New York Attorney General Letitia James has urged dismissal of the lawsuit.
