The death of Robert Brooks, an incarcerated man who was beaten at Marcy Correctional Facility in December, has been officially ruled a homicide, according to his family’s attorney. The medical report determined the cause of death as compression of the neck and multiple blunt force injuries.
Brooks, a Greece, NY resident, was transferred to Marcy Correctional Facility just weeks before his fatal encounter with officers from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). Bodycam footage, released by the New York State Attorney General’s Office, shows officers assaulting Brooks while his hands were cuffed behind his back.
Following his death, Brooks’ family filed a lawsuit against 17 defendants. The incident has sparked widespread protests and calls for prison reform from advocates and lawmakers. So far, one officer has resigned, while multiple others involved in the beating have been suspended without pay. The Brooks family is expected to release a public statement regarding the findings.
