Restaurants suffering losses from pandemic switch to selling essential groceries

Written by on April 19, 2020

Many restaurant owners around the country haven’t been able to make up their dine-in losses with take-out and delivery. As a result, they’ve had to come up with other ways to generate revenues. Subway, for example, has started offering bread, cheeses and meats that it usually puts into its sandwiches in five states at 250 of its locations. The Panera Bread company has created a new service called Panera Grocery. Shoppers can order for pick up and delivery milk, cheeses, yogurt and fruits and vegetables in addition to the company’s well-known bagels, breads and sandwiches. They’ve promoted this offering with the tagline “From our pantry to yours.”

Rochester restaurant owners have also noticed this new sales opportunity. As reported by the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, locals can find a variety of groceries for sale at the Flour City Bread Co. at the Rochester Public Market; Marty’s Meats at 703 Park Avenue; The 585 Rockin Burger Bar at 250 Pixley Road; The Tree City Cafe in Brighton; and The Village Bakery is at 5 State Street in Pittsford and 44 E. Main Street in Webster. Flower City Produce in the Rochester Public Market, which used to sell exclusively to restaurants, also now sells to consumers.
