In Mid-March, houses of worship closed their doors to help stop the spread of Covid19. Large gatherings are still banned until Phase 4 of re-opening New York. However small groups of 10 are permitted as of Thursday morning.

On Wednesday Governor Cuomo acknowledged the need for the religious community to come together during this time.  He gave the green light for in-person services to reconvene at midnight.

“I get it” Cuomo said during Wednesday’s briefing.

“At this time of stress and when people are so anxious and confused, I think those religious ceremonies can be very comforting. But we have to find out how to do it and how to do it safely and do it smartly.”

The key to a safe ceremony is social distancing, masks and keeping attendance under 10 people.

Today I witnessed a small group having service gathered outside an Orthodox Synagogue.

It was a beautiful sight to see people practicing their faith and social distancing.

Many churches are hosting service online. Drive-up sermons are another way to assemble responsibly.

I agree with Cuomo that men and women of faith need to be in the presence of God during these times.
