Disclaimer, I’m not a theatre geek or critic, but when a show is good – it is good!

Without further ado, La Cage aux Folles kicked off Geva’s 2019-2020 season with a bang, a BIG bang!

Spectacular!

It was a pleasant surprise to see Artistic Director Mark Cuddy, who outdid himself, starring in La Cage au Folles as Georges. The 19/20 season is also Mark Cuddy’s 25th Anniversary at Geva, so congratulations!!

The cast, the lights, the costumes, the set, the makeup, the music and dancing all come together in a way that was magical. Bravo, Geva!

Danny Vaccaro plays Albin, the star of the drag show cabaret Zaza, and Georges’ life partner. Georges is the emcee and owner of “La Cage” a nightclub in St. Tropez. He has a son who comes home to drop a bomb on him, he’s getting married to his love, Angelique, but her parents are not “open minded”.

If you are not familiar with this Tony Award winning production, don’t worry! I won’t ruin it by telling you what happens next, however bring some tissue with you.

My favorite moment musically was when Zaza, played by the amazing Danny Vaccaro, worked the crowd and then sang the song “I Am What I Am” at the end of Act 1… WOW, that was simply beautiful.

And lastly, to my favorite character Jacob, played by Kevin Curtis, thank you for giving me life.

What Kevin did with Jacob, the “butler/maid”, was outstanding for me. Yasssss, Jacob is a whole mood and I loved every moment.

The entire cast was marvelous!

La Cage aux Folles is a great season opener, definitely enjoyed this one very much.

Thank you Geva for making me fall in love with theatre.
