Rochester Red Wings outfielder James Wood has been named the International League Player of the Month for May. This marks the first time a Red Wing has received the honor since Jake Alu in September 2022. Wood, a top prospect in the Washington Nationals system, had an impressive month, leading the league with a .394 batting average, a .506 on-base percentage, a .746 slugging percentage, and a 1.252 on-base plus slugging. He also led his team in total bases (53), RBIs (22), and walks (17), and tied for runs scored (18), hits (28), and home runs (7). Despite a hamstring injury on May 23, which landed him on the injured list, Wood’s performance included eight multi-hit games and a 12-game hitting streak. Before his injury, there was speculation about a potential call-up to the big leagues, but Wood emphasized his focus on consistency and preparation.
