PROTECT Act Proposed to help judges detain violent offenders before trial in New York
Written by Site Hub on May 3, 2025
Senator Pam Helming and Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter have introduced the PROTECT Act, aimed at giving judges clearer authority to detain suspects who pose a public safety risk before trial. The bill includes standardized risk assessments and mental health evaluations. Inspired by the tragic death of Officer Jamieson Ritter, advocates argue the law could prevent repeat offenses. It has support from Gov. Hochul’s office and will be reviewed by the Senate Codes Committee next week.
