Postmaster General Louis DeJoy plans to cut 10,000 workers and billions from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) budget, collaborating with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to tackle major issues at the $78 billion agency.
The agreement, which also involves the General Services Administration, aims to improve efficiencies amidst USPS struggles.
Concerns have been raised about the negative impact of these cuts, with critics warning that it could lead to the agency’s privatization.
USPS currently employs around 640,000 workers and intends to implement the cuts through a voluntary early retirement program within the next 30 days.
This follows previous efforts to reduce operating costs by over $3.5 billion annually and earlier cuts of 30,000 workers in 2021.
The agency has faced ongoing challenges due to declining first-class mail volumes and pressure for privatization.
