Police to pose as highway workers along Rt. 104 for ‘Operation Hardhat’

Written by on April 19, 2024

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced that police officers will disguise themselves as highway maintenance workers along State Route 104 as part of “Operation Hardhat.” This initiative aims to crack down on traffic violations within work zones, such as speeding, using cell phones while driving, ignoring flagging directions, not wearing seat belts, and violating the Move Over Law. The operation comes in response to exceptionally high speeds recorded in the area, with the top three speeds in the past year being 139, 117, and 110 miles per hour. These figures were captured by the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, highlighting the need for increased safety measures. A recent incident where a driver hit a sign in a construction zone without causing injuries has further underscored the dangers. “Operation Hardhat” will continue along Route 104 throughout the year to enhance safety for both workers and drivers.
