Pilot Forgets Passport, Forces United Flight to Turn Around Mid-Air

Written by on April 4, 2025

A United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai was forced to turn around two hours into its journey after one of the pilots realized he had forgotten his passport. Flight UA 198 returned to San Francisco, where a new crew was arranged and the flight eventually resumed, landing in Shanghai about six hours late. The incident impacted not only the original flight but also delayed the return flight to Los Angeles. Passengers expressed frustration over the unexpected delay, although some appreciated the pilot’s honesty. Aviation analyst Shukor Yusof called the error “embarrassing” and “unacceptable” for a global airline, noting the high cost of rerouting and compensation. The mishap adds to a string of recent issues for United Airlines, including a lawsuit over a bathroom incident and controversy surrounding a passenger with medical needs.
