Mary Anne Cooper, a substitute teacher, has since been removed from the substitute teacher list at Penn Yan. The removal was because Cooper hit a first grade student.

Cooper was arrested after the child reported the incident and school officials reviewed the tape. She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and second degree harassment.

The district released a statement. Part of this statement read:

“Our number one priority remains the safety of all of our students. We will continue to work in partnership with you and the Penn Yan Police Department to create a safe instructional environment, which promotes learning.”
