Penfield High School’s Team 1511 Rolling Thunder is gearing up for the 2025 FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas, where they’ll compete with teams from over 30 countries. The team earned their spot after winning the Impact Award at the Buckeye First Robotics Regional competition. Students say the team experience goes far beyond engineering—many are developing leadership, communication, and creative skills through outreach, marketing, and media projects. Junior Charlie Heinen highlighted the value of leading events to inspire younger students, while sophomore Kevin Phan encouraged newcomers to jump in, citing the team’s ThunderTech training program that teaches core robotics skills. From programming and building to graphic design and social media, Rolling Thunder proves robotics is for everyone. The community can support their journey through a GoFundMe fundraiser.
