Authorities say Anastasia Weaver and Sulamain Hawkins Sr., both 19, left their baby alone in an attic with two pit bull-type dogs while they went downstairs to smoke marijuana. The child was left unattended for up to an hour and later found with severe trauma. He was rushed to a hospital but did not survive.

On Thursday, Hawkins pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, agreeing to a 1-to-3-year prison sentence. Weaver’s trial is set for March 31.

Prosecutors described the attic conditions as “deplorable”, adding that the couple had been staying in the home for months before the incident. Animal Control secured both dogs from the property.
