Ontario to Impose 25% Electricity Tariff on New York Starting Monday
Written by Site Hub on March 7, 2025
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the province will impose a 25% tariff on electricity exports to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota starting Monday. The move is a direct response to President Trump’s trade policies, which recently introduced 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports—though the White House has since paused these tariffs for a month.
Ford, speaking on Fox Business Network, criticized the trade measures, stating they would hurt both American and Canadian families by driving up inflation and job losses. He described the situation as “chaos” and “unacceptable”, arguing that it contradicts Trump’s promises of lower costs and economic growth.
With businesses and consumers expected to feel the impact, both Canada and China have threatened reciprocal tariffs. The White House and governors from the affected U.S. states have yet to respond.
