Officials: Monroe County domestic violence reports on the rise in 2023
Written by Site Hub on October 2, 2024
Domestic violence reports in Monroe County have significantly increased in 2023, according to the Willow Domestic Violence Center. More than half of Rochester residents and nearly half of those in surrounding suburbs reported experiencing physical abuse. The county’s domestic violence rates are approximately twice as high as the state average. One alarming trend is the sharp rise in domestic violence-related homicides, with 13 reported in 2023, a notable increase from previous years.
State and local leaders, including the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, are focusing on various forms of abuse, including financial abuse, which often prevents victims from leaving abusive situations. Willow Domestic Violence Center has also announced the creation of a new Family Justice Center in Irondequoit to consolidate resources for victims and survivors. Leaders emphasize the importance of listening to and supporting survivors without judgment.
