NYS HEAP Offers Financial Relief for Winter Heating Bills

Written by on November 2, 2023

After the first snowfall, RG&E has announced that their average consumer will likely experience a decrease in gas heating expenses, though the same cannot be said for electricity bills. From November to March, RG&E predicts a $40 savings on gas bills for the average home, in comparison to the previous year. On the other hand, during the December to March billing cycle, customers are advised to brace themselves for an estimated $40 hike in their electric bills.

Starting from November 1st, applications for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will be open until either the allocated funds are exhausted or mid-March, depending on which comes first. HEAP is designed to offer financial aid to qualified customers, with eligibility determined by the household’s gross monthly income and size. Additionally, HEAP provides monetary assistance for the repair or replacement of home heating sources such as furnaces and boilers.
