NYS Cooling Assistance Program Now Accepting Applications

Written by on April 16, 2025

New York State has opened applications for its 2025 Cooling Assistance Program, offering free air conditioners to eligible low-income households. Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, the initiative is part of the federally funded Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) and aims to protect vulnerable residents from heat-related health risks. Households that qualify—those with young children under 6, seniors over 60, or individuals with heat-sensitive medical conditions—must also meet income guidelines. The program includes installation and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Over 87,000 households have benefited from the program in the past five years. Applications are open through early June, and interested applicants should contact their local social services department.
