NYC Announces Commemorative MetroCards Honoring Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary

Written by on August 8, 2023

As the 50th anniversary of hip-hop draws nears, New York City continues to show its appreciation to hip hop by unveiling four distinct MetroCards. These cards celebrate the contributions of LL Cool J, the late Pop Smoke, Rakim, and Cam’ron.

The limited edition MetroCards will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis from vending machines located in the artists’ respective birthplaces. The cards honoring LL Cool J are available in Queens at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue station, served by the E, F, M, and R subway lines. For fans of Brooklyn-native Pop Smoke, the MetroCards are for sale at the Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway station on the L line, as well as the New Lots Avenue station on the 3 line.

The MTA in New York released 40,000 cards featuring LL Cool J and Pop Smoke for purchase last Saturday (Aug. 5). Later this month, an additional 40,000 cards recognizing Long Island’s own Rakim and Harlem’s Cam’ron will be made available systemwide.
