NY Health Officials Urge Rabies Vaccination for Pets Amid Rising Cases
Written by Site Hub on August 3, 2025
New York State health officials are encouraging pet owners to update their pets’ rabies vaccinations following 364 confirmed animal cases since July 2024, including recent infections in Nassau, Schenectady, and other counties. Officials report a concerning rise in positive tests, especially in raccoons and, unusually, in domestic cats. Rabies is typically spread through saliva, and infected animals may exhibit aggression or approach humans abnormally. Though human cases are rare, residents are advised to avoid contact with wild or stray animals and to consult a doctor if exposed. Vaccination remains the best preventive measure.
