NY DMV Try to Combate Catalytic Converter Theft

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that they are trying a new tactic to fight catalytic converter thefts. Across the state, the DMV stated that over the past three years, some areas of the state have seen catalytic converter thefts increase up to 200 percent per year and one of the main targets has been new car dealerships.
In order to combat the expensive part, a new initiative from the DMV allows auto dealers to etch a traceable serial number onto the catalytic converter. The serial number can then be linked back to the vehicle from which it was stolen. Kits are available at the DMV.
