NY Cheer Competition Petitioning to Move State Championship from RIT over Vaccine Mandate
Written by Site Hub on January 16, 2022
As the NYSPHSAA Competitive Cheerleading Championships approach, many high school cheerleaders are pushing back against a COVID-19 vaccine requirement as the event is set to take place at Rochester Institute of Technology on March 5. In an online petition on change.org, over 11,000 people have signed to move the event or let unvaccinated girls compete. According to the NYSPHSAA, they do not require a COVID-19 vaccination for athletes, however, as of early January, RIT’s event policy requires people to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
At this time, RIT will not change/make exceptions for the cheer competition. RIT stated: “RIT has implemented policies in our venues to protect our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Our policies are based on science and have been informed by local, state, and national health agency guidance.”
