No REAL-ID For Air Traveler? TSA Fee Goes From $18 To $45 In 2 Weeks
Written by Tariq on December 3, 2025
A new notice released by TSA officials states that starting February 1, 2026, going through airport security without federally approved identification will cost you more than just extra time. TSA first unveiled this change in a notice published on November 20, in which it was stated that travelers “…will be required to pay an $18 fee.” In the most recent notice published on December 2, the fee has increased to $45. Currently, additional security screening for travelers without a compliant ID is free of charge. In the December 2 notice, a quote from a TSA spokesperson explains the intention of the fee is to ensure the cost of the verification process is covered by the traveler, as opposed to being funded by taxpayer dollars.
