Nissan warns owners of older vehicles not to drive them

Nissan has issued an urgent warning to owners of approximately 84,000 older vehicles, advising them to stop driving due to the risk of exploding Takata air bag inflators. The inflators, found in certain 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, and 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4 models, have been linked to one death and 58 injuries since 2015. The defective inflators can explode in a crash, sending metal fragments that can cause serious injury or death. Owners can verify if their vehicle is affected by checking their vehicle identification number on Nissan or Infiniti’s recall websites. Nissan is offering free repairs, towing, and in some areas, mobile service and loaner cars. The recall, originally issued in 2020, still has around 84,000 unrepaired vehicles. The Takata inflator defect has resulted in the largest auto recall in U.S. history, affecting multiple automakers and causing at least 35 deaths worldwide.
