Nicole Bus: From the Netherlands to the ROC

“I feel free as a biiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrd! Flying around in the blue. As long as, baby, as long as I’ve got…” *insert Wu Tang’s ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ sample here*

I know you’ve heard this song before. And I know you can’t forget that voice! What’s the name behind the voice, you ask? Half-Dutch, half-Curaçaose singer/songwriter Nicole Bus.

In a small village in the Netherlands, Nicole Bus started singing when she was just a little girl at her local church . From there she learned the keyboard, how to make beats, and eventually started to write her own songs. Her music education continued at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she got the opportunity to perform around the world!

Nicole’s big break came when she finished as a quarter-finalist on The Voice of Holland in 2013 and met the Grammy nominated producer, Needlz (who has produced for the likes of Drake, Cardi B, 50 Cent, etc). With his help Bus caught the attention of Roc Nation and was signed to the label in 2018. She then released the single we’ve all come to know and love, ‘You’.

According to Bus, the song actually serves as an ode to black men everywhere. She stated,

“In the media, the profile of Black males is pretty negative. In the heavy times we’re going through right now, we don’t have an encouraging song about the beauty, strength, and intelligence of our black men. I decided to write one. I thought it would be cool to turn it around make a love story about this subject. The “C.R.E.A.M.” sample felt so perfect. It’s a very beautiful dedication to boost character and morale and share love instead of all this negativity.”

I know that’s right! We’re keeping tabs on Nicole Bus, who knows where that voice will land her next!
