Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat make billboard history

Written by on May 17, 2020

This week Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat, along with Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce have made billboard history. For the first time ever, the first two positions in the Billboard chart have been held by female rap artists.

Shockingly, ‘Say So’ is the first Minaj single to ever reach the number 1 Billboard spot. It is, however, her 109th charted title. With ‘Say So’ Minaj has finally broken the record for ‘the longest wait for a first Hot 100 No. 1, by total career entries’.

Minaj took to Twitter to say, ‘I love you so much. Omg. Barbz you’re just ??. You just never cease to amaze me. You never stop making me proud. I saw everything u guys did this past week. Barbz & Kittenz made history. Love you @DojaCat’.

Despite missing out on the number 1 spot, this is still a historic moment for Beyonce who has now successfully secured Top 10 hits in four different decades.

Women in the hip hop and R&B genre have struggled to make their mark in the music industry, often being overlooked for male rappers. Minaj, Doja Cat, Beyonce, and Megan Thee Stallion have more than proved that women in the R&B and hip hop industry are unstoppable forces.
