New Orleans Coroner confirms cause of bounce artist death

Written by on March 26, 2020

On Friday, March 20, the Coroner’s Office in New Orleans confirmed that Oliver Stokes Jr., popularly known as the bounce artist and deejay Go DJ Black N Mild, died as a result of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). He was only 44 years old when he passed away on Thursday, March 19.

Stokes initially had signs of the illness on March 9 in Gentilly where he was working as an in-school suspension coordinator for the Arthur Ashe Charter School. He had started the job in July 2019.

Stokes had kept people updated about his infection on Facebook throughout the month. On March 9, when he visited the Ochsner Urgent Care-Lakeview facility, he had a temperature of 102.4 degrees Fahrenheit. He was then admitted with pneumonia to the University Medical Center on March 11. He displayed an emoji face wearing a surgical mask when he explained to family, friends and fans that he didn’t have the flu as hoped.

FirstLine Schools CEO Sabrina Pence said that their school community is “devastated” by the loss.

The music community has been equally devastated: For more than 25 years, Stokes deejayed at southeast clubs, parties and a variety of events. He founded a Louisiana chapter of Go DJ Global. He also hosted one of the first-ever New Orleans bounce radio mix shows and hosted a separate rhythm and bounce show out of Houston, Texas after Hurricane Katrina.
