New Jersey Confirms It’s First Black Woman To State Supreme Court

On Thursday, the Senate unanimously confirmed Fabiana Pierre-Louis to the New Jersey Supreme Court.
Pierre-Louis is the youngest person and first Black woman to hold the title. The 39 year-old lawyer has a background in public and private practice and will be taking her position sometime next September, when the current justice finishes his term.
She was confirmed by a vote of 39-0, the one absent senator couldn’t vote but said they would supported her have if they were there at the time.
Democratic Senator Troy Singleton of Burlington said:
“Today is a historic day, so there’s no way to mince words about that. But what makes it even more special is she is uniquely well-qualified for this opportunity.”
Pierre-Louis was born in New York City to Haitian Immigrants, she graduated from Rutgers University and got her law degree at Rutgers University Law School. After law school she clerked for associate Justice John Wallace, the last African – American to serve on the court and whose who’s seat she’ll fill.
