New FTC ‘Click to Cancel’ Rule Empowers NY Consumers
Written by Site Hub on July 9, 2025
The Federal Trade Commission’s new “Click to Cancel” rule, effective July 14, simplifies how consumers end unwanted subscriptions. The rule mandates that companies must offer cancellation methods that are just as easy as signing up, eliminating tactics like requiring phone calls or live chats unless those were used to subscribe. New York Attorney General Letitia James praised the move, noting it protects consumers from recurring charges they didn’t intend to keep. The rule also requires businesses to clearly disclose auto-renewal terms and obtain informed consent. Consumers can report noncompliance via the Attorney General’s website.
