A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, nicknamed “razor blade throat” due to a severe sore throat symptom, is spreading in the U.S., accounting for about 37% of cases as of early June.
Though more transmissible, experts say it doesn’t appear more dangerous than previous variants.
First detected in Asia in January, NB.1.8.1 is derived from the Omicron lineage and is currently classified as a “variant under monitoring” by the WHO.
