Written by on May 29, 2025

One high school senior at Monroe High School was presented with the 2025 Wyoma Best Scholarship for Future Journalists. The scholarship, presented by the Rochester Association of Black Journalists, is awarded every year to a student who plans to major in a field of study relating to broadcast journalism, print, or film. Adriana Morales is this year’s recipient. After graduating from Monroe High School, she’ll attend Temple University to major in sports media. She was among the applicants who had to submit an essay on a topic chosen by the association and show a commitment to advancing public understanding of issues faced by people of color via the media. Morales said she wants to be a part of the generation of storytellers who put more people of color and women in front of the camera. “I mainly want to go into journalist because I feel like my voice needs to be heard,” Morales said. “I feel like coming from the RCSD, a lot of kids have a lot to say, and I just feel like I could be an inspiration to other kids, getting my voice out there. I want to shout out my mom for always pushing me, even when I felt like it was a lot or too much to handle. She always helped my persevere.”

The RABJ is an affiliate of the National Association of Black Journalists, an organization of more than 4,000 journalists, students, and media-related professionals who advocate for diversity in newsrooms and news content.
