A Monroe High School football star is making history on the field while setting his sights on a future in Division I football. Messiah Hampton, a senior wide receiver, has officially broken the Section V all-time record for receiving yards. During the Red Jackets’ most recent game, Hampton ran 95 yards for a touchdown, bringing his career total to more than 2,300 yards and surpassing the previous record. “It was a surreal feeling,” Hampton said. “It just took my mind back to when I was a young 13, 14-year-old kid training every day, putting in the extra time, staying after practice, early mornings. I was truly grateful and thankful for that kid, and it was just a surreal moment like this is really my life.” Despite his success, Hampton said what he values most is being part of a team.
“Being able to compete and work at something with other like-minded people that love the same sport, I would say that’s my favorite thing about it,” he said. Hampton credits his family, faith and school community for supporting his growth both on and off the field. He participates in Monroe’s SMART program, which prepares athletes to play at the NCAA level while keeping them on track academically. Next year, Hampton will take his talents to the University of Oregon. While moving across the country will be a challenge, he said he welcomes the opportunity. “It all starts with a dream and it all starts with a goal,” Hampton said. “I was once an 11, 12, 13-year-old kid with just a dream and a goal to make it to the NFL or have a Division I scholarship or break records. Of course, in the moment, it seems out of reach, but if you wake up every day and work hard for it, devote your time and don’t be afraid to be different, you can truly accomplish it.”
