A new phishing scam is circulating in New York, sending text messages that appear to be from the DMV about “unpaid penalties” or traffic tickets.
The messages link to fake DMV websites designed to steal personal information.
Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo warns that the DMV never verifies information via calls or texts.
Residents are urged to confirm suspicious messages with their local DMV, and victims should report scams to police or the state attorney general.
