Monkeypox Virus: NYC Resident Tests Positive

New York State Health officials announced over this weekend that a New York City resident has tested positive for the virus that causes monkeypox. While they wait for further confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control, the unidentified patient isolates and treats the case as positive. According to the CDC, Monkeypox is “ a rare disease that is caused by infection with monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae. The Orthopoxvirus genus also includes variola virus (which causes smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus.”
