Missouri U.S. Rep. Cori Bush lost the Democratic primary for the state’s 1st Congressional District to St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, backed by pro-Israel groups. Bush, known for her progressive views and part of the “Squad,” faced significant opposition due to her criticism of Israel and support for Palestinians. This opposition was a factor in her defeat, mirroring the recent loss of New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman. Despite her advocacy and actions, such as protesting the eviction moratorium and supporting abortion rights, Bush’s stance on Israel fueled Bell’s campaign. Bell, supported by Jewish leaders and various groups, highlighted Bush’s divergence from President Biden’s domestic agenda, including votes against key bills. This primary, one of the most expensive of the year, saw Bush unapologetically defending her positions, while Bell focused on broader voter concerns.
