Travelers heading home from Thanksgiving face severe weather challenges as an Arctic blast grips the U.S., bringing the coldest temperatures since last winter. The National Weather Service warns of dangerous wind chills, subfreezing temperatures, and heavy lake-effect snow across large portions of the country.
Temperatures will drop to single digits in the northern Plains, with wind chills below -15°F in states like Minnesota and the Dakotas. Northeast states will see 30–40°F temperatures, while the Midwest braces for 20–30°F. Southern states, including parts of Florida, may experience frost and freezing conditions that could harm crops and outdoor plumbing.
Lake-effect snow has created hazardous travel conditions, especially in areas like Buffalo and Watertown, N.Y., where snowfall could reach 6 feet. Travel bans and warnings have been issued, urging drivers to avoid roads or take extra precautions. Airports like Erie International have experienced closures, and over 2,300 flights were delayed Friday.
While the southern U.S. sees rain and thunderstorms, most other regions will have clear skies but frigid weather. Authorities stress preparedness for the snow and cold, recommending emergency kits, slow driving, and extra vehicle space to ensure safety.
