Michael Jackson musical and other Broadway productions postponed

Written by on May 16, 2020

The Broadway musical about Michael Jackson’s life called “MJ” (previously titled “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”), that was supposed to start on July 6, has been postponed until March 2021. It will debut with preview performances at the Neil Simon Theatre. Written by 55-year-old American playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon, “MJ” will feature Jackson’s songs as the story explores the music legend’s life.

“MJ” isn’t the only postponement. Broadway League president Charlotte St. Martin announced this week that all productions have been postponed with a tentative return date of September 6, 2020. As she explained in a press release: “While all Broadway shows would love to resume performances as soon as possible, we need to ensure the health and well-being of everyone who comes to the theatre — behind the curtain and in front of it — before shows can return.”

Anyone who purchased tickets for shows that were supposed to run through September 6 can request a forever credit voucher worth 120 percent of their original order or a full refund that includes service and handling fees. Broadway typically employs nearly 100,000 workers. Ticketholders can also choose to donate their ticket amounts to the Broadway Cares COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund to help those workers who are unemployed as a result of the pandemic.
