MCC Holds Off On Teacher Layoffs

The Monroe Community College board of trustees has voted to avoid cutting jobs. Not long after MCC students and faculty protested pending teacher layoffs, the board approved a new measure, which includes voluntary retirement and separation incentive plans for eligible full-time employees. The decision comes after the faculty union made cost-saving recommendations last month after college leaders said staffing cuts were necessary to address its current fiscal reality amid a decline in enrollment. MCC President DeAnna Burt-Nanna. “The humanity of this moment is not lost on me.” Burt-Nanna said she’s also charging a team to work over the next 15 months to assess the college’s 100+ program offerings to decide which ones need more attention, and which ones may need to be phased out.
