In honor of Black History Month, Mattel is celebrating the 45th anniversary of Black Barbie with a special collaboration alongside the Black In Fashion Council (BIFC). This initiative pays tribute to Kitty Black Perkins, the creator of the first Black Barbie, while encouraging diversity and inspiring young Black girls to explore careers in design.
Lindsay Peoples, co-founder of BIFC, expressed excitement over the partnership, emphasizing its role in breaking barriers and creating opportunities for future Black designers.
As part of the celebration, Mattel has spotlighted emerging Black designers, including Larissa Muehleder of Muehleder, Nia Thomas, and Fumi Egbon of Fumi the Label, ensuring that Black Barbie continues to represent style, creativity, and empowerment for new generations.
