Puerto Rico experienced a widespread power outage on Wednesday, the second major blackout in four months.
The outage began around 12:40 p.m. due to a system failure, affecting 1.4 million LUMA Energy customers—about 76% of its customer base.
The cause was reportedly a combination of a protection system failure and vegetation interfering with a transmission line between Campaleche and Manatí.
LUMA Energy, responsible for power transmission, said restoring electricity to 90% of customers could take two to three days, with critical facilities like Centro Médico hospital in San Juan prioritized.
The Palo Seco plant was brought back online around 3 p.m., aiding recovery. Rep. Ritchie Torres noted over 400,000 residents remained without power.
