MARTA Sues Employee Over $620K Overpayment

A MARTA station cleaner was mistakenly paid $620,000 in overtime in April, despite not earning the money, the transit agency confirmed to Atlanta News First. The error was not discovered until July, and the funds remained unrecovered five months later.

MARTA attributed the overpayment to a clerical error and said it initially worked with the employee to recover the money. After the employee did not return the funds, MARTA filed a civil lawsuit seeking repayment. Both the employee who received the money and the employee involved in the clerical error are no longer with the agency.

The incident comes amid other scrutiny of MARTA’s financial management. Last month, the agency settled a dispute with the city of Atlanta for $52 million over allegations involving its handling of funds from the “More MARTA” sales tax program.
