Local Doctors Prepare for Deadly Fungus Cases in NY

Written by on March 24, 2023

Across the country, a yeast infection that can cause severe and even fatal infections is on the rise. The CDC is sounding the alarm on the highly fatal and drug-resistant fungus.

Dr. Stephen Thomas, director of global health and professor of medicine at Upstate Hospital, stated: “It can be highly fatal. Anywhere from 30-60 percent of people who get severe infections can die…Sick people are at increased risk for getting infections with opportunistic pathogens like Candida auris. It can get on surfaces, it can get on equipment, it can get on things like blood pressure cuffs or things of that nature, and so it can be passed pretty rapidly…Don’t use antibiotics when you don’t need them and wash your hands as frequently as possible.”
