While we may now be used to hearing rappers declare their love in rap tracks and pour their hearts out on their albums, this was not always the case. So, who do we have to thank for paving the way for rap love songs? LL Cool J claims, himself.
During a recent interview with Complex Media, LL Cool J discussed what impact he believed his legacy has had on the rap industry. The rap artist, who was born in Queens, claimed he initially received a lot of backlash for his hit ‘I need love’ as mainstream rap was supposed to be hardcore and hyper-masculine.
He said, ‘You gotta remember, hip-hop was, still is to a certain extent, but back then it was really conservative and if the energy wasn’t testosterone like I’m punching you in your face, kicking the door down, you don’t get a lot of credit.’
LL Cool J explains his music gave artists such as Drake, who regularly rap about their emotions and love, a platform. He explains ‘I put Loveland that female, that vibe in there that gives dudes, like, you know, these guys a lane… it paved the way for guys like that’. Although LL Cool J admits to liking Drake’s music, he does not think there is a strong similarity between himself and Drake.
