Lizzo Faces New Lawsuit

The legal troubles surrounding Lizzo continue as the Grammy Award-winning star faces another lawsuit. A previous employee has accused the artist of creating an environment riddled with bullying, racial prejudice, and various forms of mistreatment.
Asha Daniels, a fashion designer, lodged a complaint in the Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday (Sept 21). She alleges verbal and physical mistreatment by Lizzo’s wardrobe manager, Amanda Nomura. Having been a part of Lizzo’s wardrobe team for her 2023 tour for a brief period, Daniels stated that Nomura often made “racist and fatphobic” comments, even resorting to ridiculing Lizzo and the background dancers “by doing an offensive stereotypical impression of a Black woman.”
Although Lizzo isn’t directly accused of the mistreatment, both she and her managerial staff are under scrutiny for not intervening. Claims in the lawsuit suggest that Nomura would often derogatorily label the performers as “fat,” “useless,” and “dumb.” It further alleges that artists were made to change attire in front of primarily white male personnel who would “lewdly gawk.”
Daniels stated:, “I was listening to this Black woman on this huge stage share this message of self-affection and compassion, yet, simultaneously, I was seeing my peers and me being consistently tormented.”
After raising her concerns about Nomura, Daniels was fired.
