Let the games begin: Special Olympics NY Winter Games holds opening ceremony in Rochester

The 2025 Special Olympics New York Winter Games officially kicked off in Rochester with an exciting opening ceremony at the Riverside Convention Center on Friday night. Nearly 900 athletes and coaches gathered to celebrate and prepare for a weekend of competition across Monroe County.

Athletes will compete in seven sports, including cross-country skiing, figure skating, and gymnastics. All programs are offered at no cost to participants, their families, or caregivers. The energy was electric as competitors paraded before their supporters, getting them excited for the events ahead.

Figure skater Matthew Gabello, a longtime Special Olympics athlete, expressed his enthusiasm for the games, sharing his 23-year journey in the sport. Special Olympics New York CEO Stacey Hengsterman emphasized the importance of the opening ceremony, noting how it motivates the athletes for their competitions.
