LeBron James set to wear Gianna Bryant’s jersey number during NBA All-Star game

Teams led by NBA stalwarts LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo are set to go head-to-head on February 16th in this year’s All-Star Game.

The annual match-up has been given an overhaul this year so that fans can honor the life, legacy and history of five-times NBA champion Kobe Bryant, who recently died in a helicopter crash, alongside his 13-year-old daughter Gianna.

In tribute, the side captained by Giannis Antetokounmpo will each wear jerseys bearing Kobe Bryant’s squad number, 24. LeBron James’ team will wear jerseys emblazoned with no. 2, the squad number of Kobe’s daughter.

When asked why he had chosen the number, James was quick to answer, saying “Zhuri” (the name of his own daughter).

While Kobe will be remembered as a formidable force on the basketball court, in recent years he was just as well-known for being a devoted father to his four daughters. The champion was often seen sitting side-by-side with Gianna at various different basketball games.

The death of Kobe and Gianna Bryant has seen an outpouring of tributes from those celebrating their own father/daughter relationships with the #GirlDad hashtag. As a tribute to both his friend and to show his pride for his own daughter, the choice to wear Gianna’s jersey number was clearly a simple one for LeBron James.
