The Buss family has agreed to sell a controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, owner of the L.A. Dodgers and CEO of Guggenheim Partners.
Jeanie Buss will remain as team governor. The $10 billion deal, first reported by ESPN, sets a new record for the most expensive sale of a sports franchise, surpassing last year’s $6.1 billion Celtics sale.
Walter, a minority stakeholder since 2021, also owns the Sparks, a women’s pro hockey league, and has interests in Chelsea FC and Cadillac’s F1 team.
Jerry Buss bought the Lakers in 1979 for $67.5 million, building it into one of the world’s most iconic franchises.
