A man is dead after being hit by a car while crossing Lake Avenue near Clay Avenue on Tuesday night. Rochester Police say the man in his 40s was not walking in the crosswalk, and the driver is cooperating with the investigation. The driver told officers that they didn’t see the man as he was crossing.
Emergency crews responded around 8 p.m. and found the man dead at the scene. RPD says the driver stayed at the scene, and drugs or alcohol are not believed to e a factor in the crash. Police say they’re working to confirm the victim’s identity and notify family. In addition, detectives are working to obtain surveillance video of the crash from nearby homes and businesses.
As News10NBC has covered, city and state officials have been working on safety upgrades for Lake Avenue over traffic concerns. A 2025 analysis by a Denver law firm found Lake Avenue to be the deadliest road per mile in the state. The analysis found that, in five years, 10 people had died from crashes on a nearly seven-mile stretch of Lake Avenue. Earlier this month, another person, a 61-year-old woman, was hit and killed while walking on Lake Avenue, near Flower City Park.
